David Octavius Hill was a portrait painter and Robert Adamson was an engineer. They started a partnership in 1843 that lasted four years. Hill used his painting experience to direct their subjects while Adamson operated the camera and completed the chemical manipulations. They preferred the calotype to the daguerreotype because it was less expensive. It also suppressed details and allowed the photographer to control lighting, expression, and gesture and thereby to emphasize the sitter’s personality. Hill and Adamson created more than three thousand photographs, including landscapes, architectural studies and portraits. Their portraits are some of the earliest examples of social documentary photography. Their wonderful collaboration ended with the early death of Robert Adamson in 1848.
